Hi Maria,
Social media has created endless opportunities for people to network. From a business perspective, social media has been very beneficial in helping to spread the word about a company I recently started. It's amazing how many friends and family became "fans" of my facebook page and therefore helped me to promote my new company throughout the nation - for FREE! Social media makes the cyberspace world seem like a much smaller place - it's adds a personal touch. It's really grown a lot in the last 5-7 years and it will be very interesting to see where it goes in the near future.

It will be back to basics, I'm sure. There will be one to one talking, face to face discussions and old fashioned marketing where people care what you want and try to meet that need rather than throw a lot of mud and hope some of it sticks.

This year will be social media gone crazy and follow on with what we saw last year, like the growth of facebook and SEO. Then when that reaches a head, people will go back to the old way of marketing, getting up close and personal with individuals and smaller groups and getting to know people, growing and developing a brand that way.

Wow - thank you for being so insightful here Cosmo"

"Humankind is radically shifting in awareness and consciousness. "
"Now is the time to question authority, use the internet as a source of alternative information to television and print. Now is the time to reflect and raise our own frequency through meditation and focused prayer. Now is the time to connect with each other and share our own awakening to encourage and support the global shift."

It is up to us to "Wake Up"...or as David Icke so aptly puts it in his upcoming book:

Human race, get off your knees
The Lion Sleeps no more

I've pre-ordered his book :)

Social Media and the internet continue to reflect our own human mind; our distinct desire to be in touch. We all have various undeniable desires that tend toward instant knowing and instant being. Examples: in a dream state you do things that you couldn't do with a human body such as fly, shapeshift, communicate telepathically, be another person, go from one place to another with a thought. These are all things that we desire to have the ability to do but cannot with a physical human body... at the moment :)
The technology we create reflects our deepest desires.
Just as cell phones reflect our desire to be immediately connected to the ones we love, social media and the internet reflect our desire to be immediately connected to the world.
Humankind is radically shifting in awareness and consciousness. We have, for so long, allowed a corrupt elite and corporatocracy be the planners and decision makers. We have decided now to put an end to that through our awakening. It was the internet itself that was instrumental in this very awakening. We are breaking out of the enslavement of mind control and social values that are meant to suppress us.
The death throes of power won't be pretty and, in fact, it will include an attempt to take away our freedom on the internet among other nasty things. It is already happening.
But in all reality, there is NO WAY they can take that from us without a revolution.
The internet will continue to grow exponentially as the number of the world's people gain access. This connects us in a powerful way that, never before, will allow us to put a stop to the strangle-hold we are in by the global elite. We are in an Info War and social media allows us to interact in a way that lets us share of ourselves, our hearts and minds in a way that can't be put in a box.
It would be like trying to put the toothpaste back in the bottle. The genie is out and there is no returning to the dark, suppressed state of before.
Now is the time to question authority, use the internet as a source of alternative information to television and print. Now is the time to reflect and raise our own frequency through meditation and focused prayer. Now is the time to connect with each other and share our own awakening to encourage and support the global shift.
The ironic thing here is that, it is the very power that would hold us back that has empowered us to move forward by their own invention of this thing we call the internet.

Maria, (2nd time posting this...)

Thanks for the opportunity to contribute!

What I see happening within the rapidly expanding social media landscape is an increasing number of ways for users of such platforms to be a lot more selective in what they are presented with. A way to deal with today's higher levels of information overload than in previous years.

I'm talking about elaborate filtering systems and softwares that not only allow users to dictate exactly what their profile pages show, but also which of that information is then transferred to another social media platform.

I envision multiple social media dashboards being released in 2010 - both online and stand-alone versions. These dashboards will allow synchronization of the user's preferred social media platforms, while allowing in-depth filtering and real-time monitoring options.

I also believe that as social media matures, many social media sites will choose to opt for a more distinct business model. Meaning, either they will be primarily "friends and family social" or they will be primarily "business social". And the savvy companies will leverage the power of both models to their great success.

Further, savvy companies will have employees dedicated exclusively to monitoring, creating, seeding, proliferating and obfuscating information regarding their company on a near-real-time basis.

	Hope this helps,

PS: Here's a GREAT article on how a Domino's Pizza chain manager used social media very successfully to handle a complaint that got "Caffeinated" right to position #1 on Google. This dude really gets it! http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/chicago-pizza-guy-creates-social-media-domino-effect/

Hey Shan - you bring up some really good points! Just talked with a dentist the other day who has hundreds of patients, been in practice for over a decade...and one comment by a 19 year patient- just one put on a social media site is hurting his business....

I think business owners will also have to figure out great incentives for their 'existing happy ' customers that outweigh the 1-3 percent in the social media-sphere!
