In the Middle Ages…Many People Believed…
maria gudelis | May 27, 2010
In the Middle Ages, many people believed that STARS were beams of light shining through the floor of heaven.
Today we know different but it goes to show you that when something NEW, or innovative comes along…it takes a while to 'catch' on…
But when it does…it's like a slapping yourself on the head and saying 'Of Course'!
…On a clear starry night…
More than 2,000 stars are visible to the naked eye.
Yet…There are 200 to 300 BILLION stars in the Milky Way galaxy!
Isn't that amazing! Hope you don't think it a "Boring Fact"..
Because it reminds me of our 'everyday' situations…that what is seen to the naked eye or…
Perhaps in your 'BELIEF SYSTEM'..
Versus reality…think about it – you can only see 2,000 stars but it is a scientific fact that there are BILLIONS of stars out there..
So there is no 'scarcity' of stars out there..
AND…May I be BOLD with you for a moment…the analogy I'd like to make…
There is no 'scarcity' of customers out their for your business!
Let's look at the use of the Internet…
The adoption of small businesses using the Internet today to 'Get More Sales" as a critical marketing channel is DISMAL!
Yes – Dismal!
According to Ad-ology stats, 46% of small business owners do NOT even have a website.
A recent study by the U.S. Small Business Administration’s (SBA) Office of Advocacy counted 26.8 million businesses in the United States. Of those, 99.9% have fewer than 500 employees and as such are considered small businesses.
So the analogy here is that for anyone offering internet marketing consulting services…well heck, there is a HUGE amount of customers out there for you now isn't there.

The point I'm really trying to make here is the importance of your mindset…
In the next blog post, I'm going to reveal an incredible story Sonja Bata told me when I interviewed her. Sonja Bata is the Chairman of the Bata Shoe Museum and head of the largest and most successful family-run business in the world, selling just one simple but indispensable article of clothing- the Shoe.
Hope you enjoyed this blog post..
What examples have you seen or stories you can tell us by commenting below about reality vs scarcity thinking?
Cheers, Maria

Neat analogy, Maria. I often hear prospective small business clients say they can't "afford" marketing in the current economic client. They see it as an expense, not an investment. I try to help them see the potential. This is a time that you can't afford to sit back and wait for the clients to come.
The 46% is that stat for the US alone or for the whole world? And even if it were the US alone, that's almost half. Imagine the number not yet online in the millions. Wow, that's a lot of potential we're not seeing but are there. We just don't see them. What's the reason for this, they still haven't catched on with the "Internet age?", can't afford it or just don't care because they're small businesses?

Hey Mike – “what’s the reason”….not catching on the “Internet Age”….
i think a combination of reasons:
1. A confused mind ‘fumbles’ – ‘takes no action’ – and I believe lots of small businesses are confused about “How to use the Internet” and not properly EDUCATED on that (big opportunity to be the REAL genuine educator to break out from the pack of fakes out there!)
2. It’s coming – we will see a larger growth in this for sure.
3. The world we are in – philosophical here but this my thought…”If Technology is supposed to be so advanced for us…why is it that most of society today, unlike 40 years ago…have to have dual income homes, leaving kids to babysitters, movies etc. and the genuine ‘breakdown’ of the family unit….so as the business owner spends his/her precious hours working working working with “BLINDERS ON”…rather than enjoying the real assets of live – Love, Relationships, seeing our stay in this time and place in this world as a ‘fun game’ to experience….…
Well -then it is hard for them to see thru the fog of ‘busyness’ to one more technological advancement, the Internet could help them…it is EASY to make a first assumption that perhaps it is a further ENSLAVEMENT…
Yet we know it is not…in fact the opposite…
make sense?

Maria,
Such a great way to point out the fact that there is no scarcity out there unless we perceive it that way. Sitting on your rear, waiting for people to knock down your door does not serve you. That's nothing more than pie in the sky thinking.
Thanks for making a very clear point to move out and be present to attract that which you want to you,
Val

Hey Val! Glad you liked it – and yes – you attract what you think! If we all start believing in the negativity thinking the media wants us to think – which is really all about FEAR – then we never become the person we were meant to be!
I was at a HR seminar last week and at one stage was a question /answer session of six CEOs
from the Banking, Airline, Real Estate, Pharmaceuticals industries & from a Giant in the IT world.
One thing that came to my mind throughout was about the visions they uphold in their
respective worlds.
“It takes a sensitive ear to tune in to the silence of the heart, it can offer us profound
experiences if we listen.”
Here, I am talking specially about the people without the faculty to listen.
As of 28 May 2010, the human population of the world is estimated by the United States
Census Bureau to be 6,823,600,000.
With a total population of approximately 1.5 billion people, the Western Pacific Region of
the WHO accounts for an estimated 8 million blind people, or more than 29% of the world's
blind population.
http://www.seagig.org/toc/v2n12/v2n12p28.pdf
From the above, we come to the conclusion that around or close to 0.0058 of the world
population is blind.
(Self calculations with help from the above web sites.)
Maria!
Your words:
"So the analogy here is that for anyone offering internet marketing consulting
Services well heck, there is a HUGE amount of customers out there for you now isn't there”.
is resounding in my ears, rather – like having had survived a cataclysmic shake up.
Just yesterday, we had blind man come over to our home to attend to some cane chairs that
needed repairing – re-weaving. As the job he undertook was extending to the next day my wife
and I offered him to stay over in the adjoining little apartment – which he gladly accepted.
He, spoke to us about the time and effort he would me saving thus. I cannot forget about the
productivity and quality of ROI to both parties in this scenario. Talking of value creation
and trust will be end less – here.
When it was time (2200 hrs) for me to finally retire after making sure that he had every thing to retire too, he was still working on a chair after dinner. He asked me to switch off the lights as I was leaving him. He further went on to say that lights do not mean a thing to people like them.
I was thinking in bed of what a profound experience I was having.
The realisations and coming to terms with "sights for a vision" and "visions for a sight".
Do we really have it or can we do something MORE about it.
Any other permutations are welcome.
Thank You – Maria!.

Hi Dileepa – I hope your comments spark a real nice contribution from others as well…
what a humbling story to make one think, recheck the ‘mind-o-meter’ so to say with the impact of your story and Your statement: “The realisations and coming to terms with “sights for a vision” and “visions for a sight”.”
To add to it is perhaps best said by Blaise Pascal:
“Most of men’s problems arise from their inability to sit quietly and alone”.

This just reinforces my "big pie" mentality. Many people in sales believe that the only way to increase sales is to take those sales from someone else that is trying to sell to a customer. However, I've always believed that there's plenty of business out there for a whole lot of us. If someone is doing something good with their business getting it marketed on the internet and using good tools and techniques, I'm not going to try to steal them from their current person.
I will stay in front of them so that if they ever become dissatisfied with that person, I'm the first one they think of. But there are so many "low hanging fruit" out there that I'm not going to work extra hard to get some of that high fruit when the low hanging fruit is just as productive and soooo much easier to get.
Business abounds – we've just got to go out there and work to get it. Oh, I'm sorry; I used that dirty word again – WORK. As Maria is so fond of saying, "Just take action". When I was in the investment business, our regional manager used to tell us to get out of the office – no one in the office was going to buy anything from any of us. The business to be written was "out there" where the people are. Same thing applies here. Until we actually get out where the business is, we will never get it. For the most part, business will not come to us – until we are well known enough that business seeks us out.
Tomorrow is Friday. A great day to get busy. Monday is a holiday, so that makes tomorrow an even better day to get busy. Guess what though. There's even a better day to get busy…TODAY!!!

Hey Maria.
I'd be honored to be a guest on your show – but I don't really know what I could bring to the table. But, I'm available if you ever want me on it.
A quick update about "activity". I've been more active this week in the physical community because of our new marketing system that we have rolled out to local businesses. It involves getting businesses involved from one end and getting local consumers to join our community on the other end. It's a very symbiotic relationship between businesses and community members.
Regardless, I've been "pounding the pavement" this week for several days speaking to BOTH businesses AND consumers. The amazing thing is (I say that with a bit of sarcasm) is that when I talk to businesses, they understand the concept and realize just how powerful it is in reaching their customers and potential customers. When I talk to consumers, they have unanswered questions that I'm unable to answer. Once I answer their questions, they become members of our community to get the great Dealz (misspelling on purpose) from the businesses. It's an extreme paradigm shift in our area, but one that can be overcome with a little explanation.
But, unless we're out there "boots on the ground" there's no paradigm shift and the concept fails.
