maria gudelis | August 5, 2010Facebook is certainly allowing small businesses to survive and thrive for many people…proving it is no longer just for kids!
Take for example one lady from Canada. Gerene Murphy, in a little town called Windsor in Canada…sells perogies for $7 a dozen via Facebook that she 'cooks up from home'!
To earn some extra money, Ms. Murphy began selling her perogies to friends and family for around $7 a dozen and then set up a Facebook page and uses the classifieds site Kijiji to advertise them. (see source below)

Social media marketing is rampant this days. 25% of the people who uses the internet spends their time on social media sites. Might as well use that 25% in to good use.

You are absolutely right Maria. Facebook is now getting wide and wild. It is not just for fan and art. It is not being the most useful tool for the dying businesses.
It will be interesting to see how some of the cases in front of the courts are resolved. so far the intellectual property precidence carried by a trademark wil override your domain so don't count on protecting your blog if not also trademarked.
Thanks for posting this Maria. It's a funny example, but quite applicable. I agree that any business, regardless of size, will make an attempt to protect their brand, and they should! I also agree that it is important to establish your business name on any social site that you are active in, as soon as possible, in order to avoid situations like this.
The only thing that I would add, is that the last time I checked, you needed to have a certain number of "Likes" (I believe it's 25, though I'm not sure how accurate that is ) on Facebook, in order to create your own Facebook URL. So for example, if "Perogy Princess" wanted to have a URL like "facebook.com/PerogyPrincess", she/he would need to have at least 25 "Likes". Not the biggest idea, but just something to think about, since it's always nice to have your brand name associated with a nice looking URL.

Hey Mark – that is correct and that is what we teach in our Social Marketing Certification program – that you do indeed need to get 25 “likes” (formerly “fans”) before you can have your ‘vanity’ name/business name claimed.
Cheers, Maria
Wow, it's absolutely amazing how far the Internet and how Social Media plays a role in our lives now… Smart lady!

Thanks for sharing this information. That prompted me to go on and snag the name of my blog right quick just so no one else can claim it. Come to think of it, I should probably claim the name of my other blog too. Good information!

Hi Maria, It seems like it was not that long ago we were preaching (i still am) the importance of grabbing your domain names, personal and business. It is not so important that you use them right away, but that you control them. We have talked hard, about owning your name via a …domain for years, but, I agree with you, social properties should be a top priority, now. And not just the big one we now know of, such as, twitter, facebook, myspace, youtube. But even looking at up and coming social properties as well. Again, we may not need to use them all, but maybe we can avoid being mistaken for someone else, who happens to use the same names.

Hey Kelvin! thanks for your feedback and yes – it is an interesting ‘cowboy’ virtual land grab now in social media. I have one client in fact that can’t get his own name back on Twitter for instance because someone else took it since he is a public figure!
Hi Maria,
Thanks for sharing.
This looks like the Perfect "Urgency" example that can be used to get someone to purchase a Fan Page set UP.
Thanks,
Christopher
